Zoom® Now Shipping K56flex™ PC Cards
Includes Rockwell L1900 series
Controller for fastest file transfers
Boston, MA, August 18, 1997 - Zoom Telephonics, a leading
manufacturer of faxmodems and other wide area network PC communications
products, announced today that it has begun shipping the Zoom/PC
Card™ 56K FaxModem. Zoom's Rockwell-based 56K
PC Card features flash memory for both the Digital Signal
Processor (DSP) and the Controller. This allows software upgrades
for feature enhancements and new standards. The Zoom/PC
Card 56K FaxModem features a Rockwell L1900 series Controller,
which has a clock speed of 28.224 megahertz - twice as fast
as the L1300 series Controller used in some competitive K56flex
PC cards. "We waited to ship until we could use
the latest Rockwell Controller," said Frank Manning,
Zoom's President and CEO. "The higher speed produces
more data throughput, particularly with compressible files
and bi-directional data transfers, and also helps assure high
performance with future standards." The Zoom/PC
Card 56K FaxModem is a Type II PCMCIA card that weighs only
1.25 ounces. It has a slim cord, rugged connector design,
built-in DAA, MNP 10EC™ Enhanced Cellular™ Technology,
and battery-conserving circuitry. The PC Card 56K
can be used with a notebook, palmtop, PDA, or any computer
with a compatible PCMCIA slot for use in the office and on
the road. Its phone cord plugs directly into a modular phone
jack. In addition, it can communicate "wireless"
by plugging into a cellular phone. Phone-specific adapter
kits are available from Zoom for most popular cellular phones
(Cellular speeds are typically slower than those achieved
over landlines.). The Zoom PC Card 56K incorporates
K56flex technology from Rockwell. K56flex is also supported
by Lucent, and is backed by central site equipment manufacturers
representing about 70% of the installed base of central site
modem ports. In addition, over 2,700 Internet Service Providers
in the U.S. alone have announced that they are supporting
K56flex. Zoom's 56K products typically achieve download
speeds from 42 Kbps to 54 Kbps when connecting to K56flex
central sites. PC Cards using the competing 56K technology,
x2, will not realize a speed beyond 33.6 Kbps when connecting
to an ISP supporting only K56flex. The Zoom/PC Card
56K FaxModem features advanced ZoomGuard™ lightning
protection, to protect against the most common cause of modem
field failures. The PC Card 56K is available for use
with both PC (Model 2875) and Macintosh (Model 2876) computers.
Communications software for DOS and Windows® or for Macintosh
is included. The MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail
Price) of the Zoom/PC Card 56K FaxModem is $229. It is available
in computer retail stores and mail order catalogs. For more
